The air in the Cave was heavy, dense with vapors strong-smelling enough as to make your head spin. Even to he who was used to these smells, because he was the Good-Walker, He-Who-Travels-Between-The-Worlds, they remained intense, but his body must always walk together with his soul, and there was little escape from them.
He grasped the fennel stick in his hand, trying to keep his restlessness under control, as he watched the Grey Dames gazing into the smoke in search of the new year's auspices; he wasn't afraid of bad omens, yet very often Fate clashed with his own wishes.
When the three women spoke, they did so with one voice.
